The appropriate insulation thickness is selected in accordance with the rules (e.g. DIN 1988) that consider the essential parameters for selecting the necessary insulation thickness with regard to pipe dimension, intended use and piping distribution.

Due to increasing energy prices play in cases of larger construction works experiences and calculations an important role as well. The optimal insulation thickness is selected to achieve the lowest costs with regard to energy price, average temperature difference, operational time and insulation capacities of the material.

When calculating pipe insulation special conditions must be considered, too: piping distribution, fittings and conditions in the environment.

Heating ISO, SV, SSL	- pipes with no special demands: directly in front of users, regulated use of heat in heated rooms	- pipes with no special demands: directly in front of users, regulated use of heat in heated rooms	- connections with maximum lenghth 8 m as a sum of supply and return piping - central distributor with belonging fittings	- lift pipes and main supply duct - connections (supply and return piping is longer than 8 m) in unheated rooms, along outside walls and along walls that border on unheated rooms
Hot (sanitary) water piping distribution ISO, SV, SSL	- smaller hot water pipelines up to DN 20, in in residential buildings where pipielines are not part of the circulation pipeline	- connections with maximum lenghth 8 m as a sum of supply and return piping, when the wall thickness does not allow greater thickness	- connections with maximum lenghth 8 m as a sum of supply and return piping - central distributor and belonging fittings	- lift pipes and main supply duct (longer than 8 m and circulating pipes)
Cold (sanitary) water piping distribution SSL	- freely laid pipelines in unheated rooms - laid in a duct with no hot water pipelines - laid in a wall or in floor and faraway from hot water pipelines	- freely laid in heated rooms	- laid in a duct next to hor water pipeline - laid in a wall or floor next to hot water pipelines	- freely laid or laid in a duct, increased relative humidity
